This performance of movement and sound examines the Quetzalcoatl narrative as a potential antidote to the spiritual and metaphysical malaise of contemporary Western society. The Mayan calendar theory portends a global shift for 2012 in consciousness and culture. Rare that I receive the opportunity to mix nightlife with my drive to raise money for charitable causes, so when I was asked to participate in a fundraiser to reelect President Barack Obama, I answered quickly ‘I’d love to. Is Obama coming?’

Unfortunately, Barack Obama is not coming but we have our next best replacement, Juanita More, yes the-entering-a-party-with-marching-band-in-tow-queen-from-San-Francisco-land and a tireless and astoundingly dedicated fundraiser herself Juanita More.

Having had worked in development for a non-profit for many years, I’ve learned that the ‘ASK’ is EVERYTHING.

I’m starting a series of weekly literary events titled ‘Babel Salon’ and I’d love for you to come.

The Sunday, August 19th event is the first ever and will feature the spoken word of Walt Cessna and surprise guests.

The Williamsburg, Brooklyn location has a living room atmosphere and is a baking studio storefront during the day on the bustling Bedford Avenue.

Because of the intimate setting, we can ONLY accept 20 rsvps per event.

IS THERE MAGIC ON THE INTERNET, RADIO OR TELEVISION?

A traveling performance & art series in New York City. A convergence of music, literature, film, photography, sculpture, paintings and live performance art. A dance party in the space between all spaces.

We all have personal guides, markers, friends or even ancestors who are willing to lend a helping hand in connecting us to the realm outside of the tangible world.

These beings act as messengers, transporters of information and images, always hinting at what lays beneath the layers of the obvious.

More than ever, Americans move further away from institutional religion as the determining voice to metaphysical questions. And closer to self-willed expression of reality beyond what is perceptible to the senses.

While the conversation on supernatural experiences are often matched to stories of mystics, angels or deities, today’s practitioners live in highly materialistic, capitalistic and virtual environments and in turn are influenced by its mediums, the internet, radio and television.

#PSYCHOPOMP 2.0 is the second in a traveling performance and art series, curated by performance artist, Alberto Cortes.

The ‘Psychopomp’ is an ancient Greek term for mediator between the unconscious and conscious realms and translates to ‘guide of souls’. It is symbolically personified in dreams as a wise man or woman, or sometimes as a helpful animal. Their role may include not only accompanying the soul of the dead, but also vice versa: to help at birth, to introduce the newborn child’s soul to the world.

In this installment in the series, Bubi Canal, Maria Chavez, Jordan Fox, Martin Keehn, Richard Kennedy, Akeem Smith & Keehnan Konyhah present themselves as the Psychopomps of the modern era.

Please join us as they interpret the underlying voice to the summer of 2012 through dance, sound, film and performance.

This series serves as a means to go to the beyond.

The Crystal Ark is producer Gavin Russom’s deepest foray into rhythm, physicality and movement.

Inspired by music he heard during a 2007 trip to Brazil, Russom returned to his Berlin-based studio and composed the first Crystal Ark songs, which drew upon both his love of psychedelic rave tracks like “Inner Light” by Phantasia and his long and deep interest in Latin rhythms. Though those intricately woven, vivid early instrumentals were compelling in their own right, Russom continued to seek out elements that would push the music’s arresting energy forward.

The group truly took form when he invited filmmaker Viva Ruiz, whom he met by chance as she was passing through Berlin on tour, to add Spanish lyrics and vocals to the raw tracks. Ruiz’s fevered vocalizations on the Crystal Ark’s first single, “The City Never Sleeps,” helped heighten the song’s already visceral intensity through to its pulsating end. Alberto Lopez, Russom’s long-time friend and high school collaborator, joined the outfit shortly thereafter, contributing live percussion to follow-up “The Tangible Presence of the Miraculous.” That track, filled with polyrhythmic drumming and a persistent acid bassline, is an intensely affecting musical sojourn made all the more rapturous by Lopez’s drumming.Following DFA’s release of those two 12”s, Russom returned to New York City, a move that further informed the sound of the music.

Like New York itself, the Crystal Ark’s output – with its cross-blend of genres, languages, and sounds – increasingly reflected the intensity, physicality and sexuality that pervades the city in which it was made. Russom and Ruiz continued expanding the band for live performances, and to further enrich and enliven the Crystal Ark’s music on recordings.

The lineup has grown to include vocalists Jaiko Suzuki and Sokhna Heathyre Mabin, both of whom previously collaborated with Ruiz, as well as electronics master Matt Thornley and bassist Tyler Pope, with whom Gavin worked during LCD Soundsystem’s farewell tour. This incarnation first appeared on the Crystal Ark’s third single, “Touch,” a song that melds funk basslines, Afro-Carribbean percussion and Ruiz and Russom’s vocals into a singular inducement to dance.

Live performances further the band’s body-centric agenda by seamlessly integrating dance and visuals into a vivid multimedia performance: Dancers Irene “Discos” Deros and Alberto Cortes make expressed the physicality implied in the group’s sound, while video artists Bec Stupak and Johnny Woods transform performance spaces with color and movement.The stunning results of this collaboration can be seen in the Crystal Ark’s live performances during their upcoming tour of Europe and the United States, and heard on their DFA album debut, to be released in early 2012.
